Classes
Sunday Mornings 10:00-11:00 AM "Contemporary Jewish Issues in Light of Jewish Law"
Current and hot topics in Jewish law, values, and lore. We deal with issues like conversion, Hebrew Christians, medical ethics, and Orthodox feminism, focusing upon the politics of piety and what makes a Jewish opinion valid.
Tuesday Evenings 7:30-9:00 PM "Rabbinic Judaism"
We first examined the events that created the Judaism that we live today. We are now tracing the Biblical wisdom tradition, to trace the ideas that became Judaism. We will conclude by reviewing the ideas and writings of the rabbis, as a mirror unto ourselves.
Thursday Evening 6:00-7:30 PM "The MIshnah -- the Jewish MInd"
The Mishnah is the first document of and evidence for the religion called "Torah" and known today as Judaism. The legal rulings, literary qualities, stirring narratives, and contemporary Christian concepts make the Mishnah an ever living book.
Thursday Evening 7:30-9:00 PM "The Exodus"
We read closely the Exodus narrative as the "story" of Israel, examining topics such as "did it happen," the archeological record, the point of the story, the purpose of the law, and the meaning of ritual. We trace the use of political irony as a narrative technique. All classes are given by Rabbi Yuter, free, open to the public, and held at the Congregation.
