Our Rabbi

Rabbi Emeritus of the Orthodox Congregation Israel of Springfield, NJ, where he served with distinction for 15 years retiring in  2002, and Professor of History and Jewish Studies at Touro College for 10 years, Rabbi  Dr. Alan J. Yuter has served as spiritual leader of B’nai Israel of Baltimore since 2005. He is also on the adjunct faculties of Anne Arundel Community College and the Union of Traditional Judaism in Teaneck, NJ.

The rabbi was ordained at the Jewish Theological Seminary and completed a Ph.D. in Modern Hebrew Literature at New York University. Deciding to leave  the Conservative Movement, he was ordained under the auspices of Hebrew Theological College, RIETS, the affiliate of Yeshiva University, as well as by Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu, Chief Rabbi of Israel. Rabbi Yuter subsequently joined the Orthodox Rabbinical Council of America where he continues to hold membership.

Following his retirement as spiritual leader of Congregation Israel, Rabbi Yuter joined the faculty of Hillel Yeshiva High School in Ocean, NJ, as well as serving as an adjunct faculty member at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, NJ. Rabbi Yuter has also help pulpits at the Jewish Community Center of Spring Valley, NY and First Hebrew Congregation of Peekskill, NY.

In addition to his doctorate, Rabbi Yuter has a BA in Philosophy from Temple University, a BHL in Bible and Talmud from Gratz College, and an MHL in Judaic Studies from The Jewish Theological Seminary.

A prolific author and philosopher who writes on religious themes in Biblical and Jewish law and contemporary Jewish thought, Rabbi Yuter has penned many scholarly articles and essays that have appeared in numerous prestigious journals and magazines. He and his wife, Linda, are the parents of a son, Rabbi Joshua Yuter, who is Rabbi of the Stanton Street Shul in downtown New York City, and a daughter living with her family in Israel.
